Stories of a Small Town Zoo
In my romance book Wild on My Mind, Fluffy is a honey badger on a match-making mission. He’s mischievous and smart, and he wants just two things in life: adventure and honey-covered treats. Fortunately, he has a plan that will give him both. All he has to do is make two pesky bipeds fall in love and produce wee ones. (Wee ones are notorious for slipping tasty snacks to wily and deserving honey badgers). Unfortunately, even if he thinks the Red-Headed One is the perfect mate for the Black-Haired One, the female human has a different opinion.
After all, she didn’t exactly have a meet-cute with the hero. In fact, it was more of a meet-ugly.
In order to join the popular crowd back in high school, foster kid Bowie Wilson tricked Katie Underwood into kissing a pig. He’s regretted it ever since, especially now that his eleven-year-daughter is facing her own bullies. As a single dad, he’s juggling raising his daughter and taking care of the motley crew of animals at his cash-strapped zoo. But when he answers a call to rescue a trio of adorable cougar cubs, he doesn’t hesitate to take on the additional responsibility. He just wishes, though, that he could remember how he knows the sexy red-head who discovered the little kits.
Katie is furious when Bowie doesn’t even recognize her. Sure, it’s been over ten years, but since she played a starring role in his diabolical high school pranks, he should at least remember her name. But his zoo’s marketing seems stuck in the late 90s and is crying for an overhaul. It’s a perfect opportunity for Katie to build the portfolio that she needs to once again escape their hometown and finally snag a job at a major PR firm. And it might just be the perfect time for a little payback. Bowie doesn’t have a lot of funds to pay for her work, and he’s also in desperate needs for volunteers to help hand-rear the cougar cubs. Luckily, Katie has the perfect idea for how he can earn her assistance.
When Katie tells him to “kiss a pig,” Bowie finally realizes that the girl he tormented in high school is the one person who can help him save the animal park…and the only woman who’s sparked his interest in years. He’s willing to grovel to help the zoo, so he agrees to land a smooch on a red river hog.
Katie’s not about to fall for the charmer a second time, but Fluffy and the rest of the menagerie have a different idea. First, the adorable cougar cubs and Bowie’s daughter work at melting Katie’s heart. She can’t help but notice how much he cares for his child and his animal charges. It’s pretty hard not to feel a little something when a hot guy is snuggling adorable baby cougars against his muscular chest.
And then there’s the fact that everyone—animals included—seems to be trying to set them up. It’s bad enough when Katie’s mother and the elderly former owner of the zoo start dropping hints. But Fluffy, the honey badger, is less subtle. He leaves a trail of Katie’s clothes straight from Bowie’s porch to the zoo’s nursery where she’s staying the night to keep an eye on the cougar cubs.
There’s an additional yank on Katie’s heartstrings when she meets the lovelorn camel, Lulubelle. The poor girl longs for companionship when she’s rejected by the resident llama herd after the birth of a little cria. Katie can’t help but fall for her story. Soon she’s helping Bowie plan fundraisers to raise money for a male camel.
But even with all the love in the air, Fluffy isn’t having an easy time of convincing the Red-Headed One to trust the Black-Haired One. But even if it means escaping from his enclosure every night to wreak mischief, he’s determined to make a match between these two former adversaries.

Two-time Golden Heart finalist Laurel Kerr spent a few weeks each summer of her childhood on family road trips. That time packed in the back seat of her grandparents’ Grand Marquis opened her imagination and exposed her to the wonders of the United States. The lessons she learned then still impact her writing today. She lives near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with her husband, daughter, and loyal cavalier spaniel.
