A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Terri
Susannah Miller was the perfect constrained person working for a high profile state elected official in New York. She was smart, organized and never dated. She tried dating while at Cornel University and it just didn’t work. In fact, it only reinforced how much she couldn’t trust men. Now, for two weeks a year, Susannah becomes Suzy.
Suzy is everything Susannah isn’t. Suzy dresses sexy and thinks nothing of having a one night stand. She has no problems picking up men and getting her sexual itch scratched. This year, she’s vacationing in West Texas at a ranch that even provides a book of men that guests can call. Suzy has no problems with cowboys. She almost had a date with one until he didn’t call but Suzy has never forgotten Jonah McKenzie.
Jonah McKenzie is smart. He had been attending Cornel University until he got a phone call from his brother letting him know that his parents had died while sky diving in Brazil. He immediately headed home to help with his younger brothers, the ranch and their cousins. Against his grandmother’s wishes, Jonah continued his undergraduate degree and is currently secretly studying for his masters degree. He turns to numbers when his life gets crazy and tries hard to keep the peace. However, after seeing the food and electric bills from his cousins bar, he’s not at all peaceful.
Which is good as he comes across a young woman attempting to escape a man in the parking lot of Bottoms Up, his cousins bar. After coming to her rescue, Suzy makes him an offer that no red blooded man could refuse and while Jonah may not have lots of experience, he’s no virgin!
Suzy’s shocked when she learns her rescuer is none other than the cowboy who never called. Giving into temptation though, she wants to ride this cowboy more than just one night. Will he be want her after he learns who she is? Can he fulfill her needs as they break every rule his parents and grandparents have ever taught him? Learning about who they’ve become may take more time than they have with Jonah beloved grandmother after him to get married.
Though this is the second book in Bottoms Up, it can definitely be read without having read the first book. Suzy and Jonah’s story is independent of anything else and as I haven’t read the first book I’m guessing that some of the secondary plots in this story have something to do with the first book. If not, I’m looking forward to reading the future books because the glimpses into the secondary characters’ lives sure was interesting.
Touches of humor are found throughout this book. Suzy comes storming to the McKenzie ranch dress like a slut only to find herself exposing her bottom to Jonah’s entire family including a grandfather who wouldn’t mind seeing more. Joe, a younger brother, enjoys pushing Jonah until he learns that he can only push so far causing a tanning bed to slide down a flight of stairs into an ugly plant. The visuals that can be imagined are unique and funny.
Not so funny is Jonah’s struggle to give Suzy the rough sex she needs to find orgasm. Jonah has been taught to never hit a woman yet Suzy needs it, desire it and will beg for it. As he learns what pleases Suzy, he also learns that there are some aspects to this rough sex that he also enjoys. But Jonah longs for sweet sex without all the pain. Can Jonah teach Suzy to enjoy that too?
Word of warning, there are a lot of important secondary characters in this story. The biggest one is Jonah’s grandmother who has control of everyone’s trust fund. She’s strict, religious and wants her family back under her roof following her rules. She’ll push everyone until they comply and slutty Suzy is not who she wants her grandson with. Sommer is Suzy’s friend. They are on vacation together and share a lot of secrets. Some how Sommer has hooked up with Jonah’s brother, Boaz making things interesting on that front. This isn’t to say that there isn’t a lot more action going on because there are a few more brothers and the female cousins, one who takes off in a helicopter and no knows where.
Each chapter starts off with either a dairy entry from Susannah or a page from the book of men. Both are interesting and her comments are, at times, insightful.
Funny, sweet, a little BDSM, and a lot of hot cowboys make this a fantastic story. I didn’t want to put it down because I couldn’t wait to read about what would happen next. Would Jonah’s grandmother do something else to set someone off, his grandfather cause more problems or would Jonah learn a bit more about his neighbors than he ever wanted to. At some points I had to laugh and at others, I could almost cry. If the first book and the rest of this series are this entertaining, I’m going to be sad when they end but as they are just starting, I had better go find that first book and get ready for some interesting times in Texas.
I wonder if I could borrow that book of men?
