Gathering Storm was an interesting read for me, and not the type of book I usually pick up.
What I think made the book work for me is how the characters' personalities fit into the storyline, how the storyline blended into the personalities, and how each highlighted the other.
The keystone - for me at least - is Vinnie and his submissive nature. He is attracted to both Charleston and RJ (with a preference for Charleston) not only because they are dominants, but because they don't force that dominance.
Thompson is a good counterpoint to Charleston in that he shows not only the bad side of dominance, but lacks the understanding of the whys behind the submissives willingly choosing someone like Charleston over someone like himself.
Different, but good and I would recommend it to others.
