A lot of misunderstandings can occur when first contact is made after a fashion with a very reclusive race: trade negotiations are initiated and the Coyote Federation is offered information in return. The problem is that the information is in the form of coordinates for a world that is suitable for human habitation.

The unexpected arrival of a ship from Earth after their long isolation from their home world leaves the inhabitants of Coyote both hopeful and wary. The lone passenger brings news-both good and bad.
The good news is that there was a survivor of the long-ago explosion of the Robert E. Lee and he is living still on Earth, in the ruined city called Boston. The bad news is that the person responsible for that act of terrorism is also still alive-and somewhere on Coyote...

Jorge Montero and Inez Sanchez are pulled back to home base from an Exploration Corps base to find out that a ship has arrived on Coyote from Earth in a roundabout route. Jorge's commanding officer, Sawyer Lee, and Inez's mother, Melissa, are also at the meeting. While there they learn that Inez's father (and Jorge's cousin) is alive when he was long presumed to be dead.
